Safety: Password Tips greenlightWRITE.com MadWebLackey.com

This idea is practical. Trust me. I've lost five or six hard drives since I discovered computers.
Picture it: You log onto almosteverywebsite.com, and they ask for your login name and your password. You've just had a hard drive crash, and you know you didn't use something easy to remember like "password" or your significant other's name as passwords. (Both are bad ideas). The reality is YOU DON'T KNOW how you registered the last time you visited the site because you are security conscious and always use a different password for each site you visit. Low Tech to the Rescue The solution is simple. Starting today, starting now, begin keeping a list of all your passwords and all your IDs and every other weird thing that sites ask you to remember. The trick is to write this stuff down immediately. If you value a website enough to register, add the URL (the site address), your login name and your password to your written list. Use a small purse or briefcase size notebook. And put the notebook back in your purse or briefcase after every use. Do not waste your time building a file under My Documents. Your hard drive will crash - it's a natural law - and all the good stuff you've got stored there will vanish NEVER TO BE SEEN AGAIN. Backing up your list that others can't access is a good idea. But if you don't label it or you leave it lying at your work station, someone will use it for their really important white paper on Egg Salad in the Tropics, and then where will you be? I access my little notebook frequently. It has never crashed. It's portable. And so far, our crack canine editorial staff hasn't decided it's tasty. Now that's security. Please note that I do not advocate writing down your list of Favorites. It is way too time consuming, and sites come and go all the time - except ours, of course. Besides, I tried it and even I'm not anal enough to keep up a project like that! There are tricks to copying your Favorites list - I'll post my choice here after I test a few. PS I out grew my notebook. These days, I use little note cards for each important password. PPS Don't forget to use some numbers in those passwords.
