This good advice came to me from the Law Enforcement & Security Council for North East Florida by way of Bill Taylor, Director of Security at Amelia Island Plantation, Amelia Island, Florida.  Thank you, Bill and the unknown authors, for this useful info for all of us.

     Stay safe,

Wallet Safety and Identity Theft Tips

By Jane Marie

The next time you order new checks, have them printed with your initials and last name instead of your first, middle and last names.  If someone takes your checkbook, they will not know if you sign your checks with just your initials or your first name.  Your bank, of course, has your signature on file.

Put your work phone number on your checks instead of your home phone. If you have a post office box, use that instead of your home address.  If you do not have a post office box, use your work address.  Never have your Social Security number printed on your checks where anyone might see it.

Identity Theft

Copy the contents of your wallet, doing both sides of each license, credit card, etc. You will have a record of what you have in your wallet plus all of the account numbers and phone numbers to call and cancel.  Keep the photocopy in a safe place so you can notify all credit card companies, etc., if your wallet is stolen.

File a police report in the jurisdiction where your wallet was stolen as soon as possible.  This proves to credit providers you were diligent and is a first step toward an investigation (if there ever is one).

Call the three national credit reporting organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and Social Security number.  The alert means any company that checks your credit knows your information was stolen, and they will have to contact you by phone to authorize new credit.

Please share this information with family and friends.  You’ll be doing them a favor and slowing down the crooks!
