San Francisco Golden
Gate Park There's a ton to see and do in San Francisco, but if you get a chance, go up or down the coast (or inland or out to sea) for even more fun and adventure. In November 2004, the DF and I took a day trip north across the Golden Gate Bridge to Muir Woods National Monument and then got a taste of California's wine country. Fabulous. |

Nothing prepared us for the enchantment of Muir Woods. This relatively small old growth forest is just north of San Francisco and worth every sharp turn of the road it takes to get there. Muir Woods is an enchantment of ferns and massive coastal redwood trees dripping with gentle rain - unless you visit in the dry season.
Our brief trip to California's wine country didn't do it justice. Of course, the rain poured down as we drove through Sonoma and Napa counties. But on the other hand, we never stopped at one of the many wineries for a wine tasting or to see if the interiors matched the charming exteriors we glimpsed from the road. We didn't even get good photographs of the delightful vistas of acres of grapes and rolling Tuscan-style hills because of gray skies and rain. We did manage a nice lunch at Gillwoods Cafe (skip the cookies in the bakery) in charming downtown Napa, a town with over 2500 places on the national Historic Register. We also drove through Petaluma, where I discovered there are few things more frustrating than having your husband drive by an enticing bead store, not once but twice, because we were lost. Good times. Good times. More information:
