What's this?

Ashna Graves has written a nice little mystery set in eastern Oregon's mountains.  Death Pans Out has a gold mining theme and several others tha make it an intersting read.  Nancy

I skimmed some humongous (Who has time for long reviews?) review of The Orchid Thief and knew I wanted to read it.  Finally I did.  Wow.  I'm going to list it under gardening books for the wonderful orchid lore and travel adventure books for website navigation purposes, but any book that makes me want to visit swamps and contains the sentence "I hate hiking with convicts carrying machetes" goes to the top of the heap for Nancy.

What bothers / enthralls me is author Susan Orlean's adventures in the world of orchid fanciers are bizarre, extremely well written and open to any of us.  Now I have to decide how - not if - I will succumb to orchid lust: move in with my sister, Jane Marie, on Amelia Island or stay in Oklahoma and build a greenhouse.  Nancy

PS  Adaptation is the film about making The Orchid Thief into a movie.  Now that I've seen it, I'm not sure how I feel about recommending it.  The UTD thinks it's brilliant for the car crashes alone, but while the acting is great and the concept is clever, Adaptation did not grab me by the tendrils and make me want to own a copy - my personal bottom line.  And definitely, do NOT read the book first.
