Dare to go Bear

Jasper Fforde is one of those genius writers who make reading into a mine field of unexpected words, plots and characters.  He has his critics, but I suspect they can't let go of strict reality long enough to welcome literary characters removed from their creators' settings and gone zanily amok.

I began with the Nursery Crime Division series where Jack Spratt is the reviled but clever detective.  (He added a T so regular folks wouldn't realize he was that Jack Sprat.)   Book one is The Big Over Easy, but the reviews for the Thursday Next series are amazing, so I'm polishing the drool off my glasses in anticipation.   Nancy

I wanted read Morag Joss' Puccini's Ghosts because I love Puccini's operas.  While Turandot is central to the plot, the novel is really about family relationships.  The book is amazing, not for those who prefer a simple read, but rather a triumph of sadness.  Nancy

Not every family is picture perfect though many of us go through great and interesting lengths to make things work.  Indeed, most literary and cinematic offerings have one or many family ties because we're all bizarre to some degree.  If The Royal Tenenbaums is one "family" movie you've missed, click on a link below or hie thee to the nearest video store.  This is definitely a film for those who those who appreciate the slightly whacked and it has a (mostly) Academy Award winning cast (Gene Hackman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelica Huston, Owen Wilson, Ben Stiller, Bill Murray, Danny Glover).  Nancy

The Royal Tenenbaums - Criterion...

Strong families get us through the bad times.  Of course, most of us make it through our lives without  murder interrupting our daily routines.

In A Small Case of Murder by Lauren Carr, the hero and his children run into more bodies than he has fingers and some characters that should be caricatures but somehow make the reader just as skin-crawlingly disgusted as the author intended.

Good job, Ms Carr!  Nancy
