You can never really make amends, but it seems corporations and governments, like individuals, ought to try.

Unjust Enrichment by Linda Goetz Holmes looks into the use of American slave labor in Japan during World War II. As I wrote this, some of the companies that exploited civilians under the Nazis were cutting inadequate checks payable to survivors of their brutalities. Japanese companies that used POWs in the same way have not been held to account.

Before the WWII generation disappears into history, perhaps we should settle as many accounts as possible. Read what Holmes has to say and act if you can. Nancy

PS In case you missed the official Japanese position on prisoners of war, it read, "It is the aim not to allow the escape of a single one, to annihilate them all, and not to leave any traces." (Japanese War Ministry document exhibit 2015, Tokyo War Crimes Trials)

Holmes states, "Nearly 40 percent of US military prisoners died in Japanese captivity, while just over 1 percent of Americans died in Nazi hands."

Given the goal of extermination, it's amazing so many POWs survived.
