Direction has always been important.  Feng Shui tells us not to position our windows to the west because evil will enter our homes (and strong sunlight).  Kanan Makiya tells us north meant "back of the head" to the Nile-focused Egyptians and that the early Christians prayed facing east, the traditional location of paradise.

In his novel, The Rock, Makiya looks at the sacred rocks of Judaism, Christianity and Islam in Jerusalem and Mecca toward which so many face for their devotions to present a mosaic of religious evolution.  Makiya's explanation for tradition and belief, albeit fictionalized, is well-researched and helpful in these times of hate and misunderstanding, though I wish there had been more to the actual story.

Still, the book is fascinating.  Knowing why another religion has chosen to do anything makes tolerance a little easier.  And knowing more about the roots of your own religion is always a better thing Nancy

Dare to go Bear

There is romance to America's Old West that continues to captivate us.  As a long time resident of Oklahoma, I live with traces of the past on an almost daily basis - we even cross the Chisholm Trail to go to the movies.

In The Santa Fe Trail, David Dary has brought history and legend into a single volume that explains, illuminates and brings the past alive.   Nancy

I only review books I like, but Public Enemies by John Walsh with Philip Lerman is the first book I've written about (for these web pages) that I couldn't read.  I picked it up and put it down,  skimmed it and studied the pictures, but I simply couldn't read story after story about the worst of mankind.

Fortunately, Public Enemies is not simply a litany of crimes and criminals, but the saga of how Walsh and the team at America's Most Wanted have aided us all in bringing so many to justice.

I urge you to pick this book and see if you are braver than I am.  It's important.  Nancy

Five-Finger Discount grabs you from the first sentence.  It's Helene Stapinski's true story, but she certainly didn't grow up next door to the Cleavers.  This is one autobiography you won't forget.  Nancy

If you've missed the news stories about the murderous mother and son team of Sante and Kenny Kimes, Son of a Grifter by Kent Walker with Mark Schone is the place to catch up.  No one could make this story up.  Unbelievable.  Nancy
