Day One of Paris 2006 - Louvre Day Three (Part One) - Île de la Cité Day Three (Part Two) - Petit Palais and Napoleon's Tomb Day Three (Part Three) - Arc de Triomphe Day Six - Paris - Montmartre, Eiffle Tower and more
After a long day of tramping through and around the glories of Paris, we wanted nothing more than a good dinner and an early night. But that's not the way I travel, and my family is well trained. We regrouped briefly at our hotel, strangely named the Hilton Paris Arc de Triomphe, since it's over half a mile away from the actual arch. That meant we were cold and footsore and hardly lost at all when we arrived at the multiple intersection on the Avenue des Champs-Elysées that contains Napoleon's tribute to his victory at the Battle of Austerlitz. He wanted something more impressive than the arches in the Roman Forum. Certainly this arch is bigger, and you can go inside and on top for a fee (or use your Museum Pass). Do it. The views are incredible at night and not to be missed. The Arc de Triomphe is the essential monument of the French military. It can be reached by an underground walkway that starts at the corner of Avenue Friedland.
Interior decorations. There is also a museum.
A view of the Eiffle Tower as seen from the top of the Arc.
The Avenue des Champs-Elysées, by day a paradise for rich shoppers After gazing our fill at the lights of Paris from the top of the Arc, everyone was starving. We walked a short way down the Champs-Elysées and bowed to the dietary restrictions of our vegetarian friend, Sari, eating pizza at Vesuvio. Some of us loved the place - especially those who ordered their pizza with fried eggs on top. Others of us will never go there again.
Next, a weekend in Normandy
