When was the last time you received a hand written letter in the mail? Sad to say, the warm feeling of getting a hand written letter writing is vanishing due to the ease of picking up a phone or sending out an e-mail. While I would be hard pressed to return to complete snail mail communication, I refuse to let hand written letters completely disappear from my life. Why? Because they show you care. Besides being much more personal, you have the benefit of choosing words carefully because you just can't go back and delete, not without scribbling or using ugly white out this especially important on those sad occasions when we must write letters of condolence. |

Select attractive stationery and matching envelopes. If you're a woman sending a letter to a man, a floral paper is fine. There is no need to purchase masculine looking stationary to send to a man. And vice versa for men. If the message is very personal, never send a post card, no matter how enticing the picture on the front is. Purchase scented paper or put a dash of dusting powder or a spritz of perfume on your paper for intrigue. It’s fun for children, parents, friends or lovers. Scented ink can be made by adding approximately 100 drops of essential oil to a teaspoon of vodka. Mix well with 2 to 3 ounces of liquid ink. Write with a nib ink pen. Don’t use scented paper and scented ink together – even those who are not subject to perfume allergies will be overwhelmed. Less is enough. Use a pen. You will have to be more careful, but this will give you time to write just the right words and use the appropriate phrasing. Make sure your handwriting is legible. You can read your own writing but will others be able to? Print if you must. Make the greeting special, i.e.,
Write from your heart. Write three or four sentence paragraphs, highlighting each topic. Don't use abbreviations because they may lend the impression that you were in a hurry to complete the letter. Somewhere in the body of the letter, write the person's first name. It personalizes the message even more. Make the closing sincere.
Perhaps you might address the envelope in all lower case letters for drama – just make sure the address meets postal standards. Secure the envelope with sealing wax only if it will be hand delivered. Otherwise, choose an appropriate sticker. Don't over do on the stickers. If a letter is to be hand delivered and not postmarked through a machine, you might punch two holes near the pointed flap of the envelope and thread a ribbon through to tie a bow. Like the Victorian homemaker whose letter writing ability spoke of the degree of her breeding, hand writing a coherent, heartfelt, grammatically correct letter will do the same for you. Who knows? You may be surprised at the letters you'll receive in return.
