Conn Iggulden is the author of a fantastic series of adult novels about Julius Caesar and one about Genghis Khan. He and his brother, Hal, got together to write The Dangerous Book for Boys to fill in those gaps in life knowledge most kids can't help but have. I sent a copy of the book to my favorite nephew. I
think our kids have become accustomed to short, sweet pieces of
information because of television. Apache Warriors,
part of the Daily Life series, is not overly long, but it packs
a lot into its 40+ pages. Nancy

We once made a very long drive while our daughter chanted, "Bephie, Bephie, Bephie," in her father's ear for what seemed like a million miles. If I had a copy of "Are We There Yet" Travel Games fo Kids by Richard Salter, perhaps I could have distracted her.
After reading through the book, I certainly wouldn't travel without one when a child is going along. Nancy |

There's a whole series (beading, decorating, scrapbooking,
etc.) of easy project how-to books from the Lizzie McGuire (Disney)
folks. The instructions are clear and the projects will appeal
to girls who like crafts. Nancy craft

Joining
the pirates is not a good
thing. Aside from the fact they're thieves and murderers,
they seem to turn on each other with some regularity. And
well, their mothers were /are probably not proud of them.
But in
the golden age of piracy so wonderfully depicted in Pirates
of the Caribbean - The Curse of the Black Pearl, the pirate lifestyle seems free and exciting - just as
it was to the women who took up piracy and were strong enough
to rise to the top. Anne Wallace Sharp has the details in Daring Pirate Women. Nancy
PS
There are still pirates operating today. They prey on the
ocean going yacht crowd - and take no prisoners. Beware.

You can't start enjoying nature too young. And as soon kids
stop putting everything in their mouths, they are usually collecting
pretty rocks. When they get older, this hobby can turn to
an interest in gemstones.
For lots of good info in easy to swallow formats, try Stuart A.
Kallen's Gems or Trudi Strain Trueit's Rocks,
Gems and Minerals. Nancy |

I'm
sure I've met a jewelry making book I didn't like, but I really like The Girls'
World Book of Jewelry. My copy has all kinds of bookmarks
sticking out of it because there are several unique projects I plan
to try. Rain Newcomb has put together a great book for all
ages. Nancy

I swear by pictures books with explanatory text for a comfortable
look at geography, history, architecture and more. Neil Morris' London summed up the city very nicely for me, and
would do very well for young or old when a guidebook or an exhaustive study is too much. Nancy

I've
been through a lot of travel books as we develop our Travel pages.
One thing that appeals to me are the child-oriented picture books
for older kids that show the details of a place or time. An
excellent example of this genre is Venice, Birth of a City by Piero
Ventura. Nancy
