What DO the three numbers (10-6-10) mean on the front of the bags, boxes and bottles of fertilizer that line the shelves in the garden section of your local store? I checked with my good friend, professional horticulturist Larry Dingman. Here's what he had to say. Those numbers indicate N-P-K or nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium (potash) content.
These are all necessary ingredients for healthy plant cells. The higher the center number, the better flowers you'll get. If you want lush greenery, choose a fertilizer where the first number is the biggest. Once you're aware of what the numbers mean, you can choose either time-release, granulated or water-soluble fertilizer. I prefer the granular type that you sprinkle around each plant every few weeks because I know my plants are hungry and need me. With the time-release variety, although more convenient, I just don't feel as wanted. Silly, but true. Whichever kind of fertilizer you choose, please read the directions and apply in a timely fashion. DO NOT use "weed and feed” fertilizer around desirable plants. The weed killer ingredient may kill your delicate plants. With the help of water and Mr. Sunshine, you'll be able to take justifiable pride in your planting practices. |
