In 1953, the New York Herald Tribune ran an ad for the movie Lili that included the first known use of smilies:

By 1982, Scott Fahlman officially introduced the smilie, or emoticon, into what had been a dull computer age of black and white screens with no graphics or pictures.  People use them to express emotion and add humor to online communications.

There seems to be no end to emoticon innovation,  Use our suggestions or create your own.  But beware of websites that offer free animated emoticons.  Free stuff online sometimes comes with a tracking or even more malicious file you may not want on your computer.
