Chewin' her toes, Ucks in her eye." ♫ My daughter and I sang this silly song to our Yorkie, Honey Bear. It never failed to bring us laughter, and Honey Bear always got a good scritchy-scratch on her fat tummy for this loving humiliation. Honey Bear was my dog. Yes, we had Gracie Fleur and Pootie, Honey Bear's mother and father, but they weren't really my dogs. Honey Bear loved me the best and I loved her the best, right back. Honey Bear was a full-blooded Yorkshire Terrier, one of four puppies. She grew to be the biggest, 12 pounds. Her ears never stood up, as Yorkie ears are supposed to, until she was about seven. All of a sudden, pop! Up one ear went and shortly after, the other followed. She was a little bit taller in her back legs than her front and her bottom wagged liked a duck's when she walked. She inherited a roundish nose and when she was very happy, it seemed like her nose would swell a bit. We called that phenomenon "love in her nose." If we made "suffer sounds" (howled), Honey Bear would join in. I think she really felt sad though, so we didn't do it too often. Honey Bear usually slept with our little girl. I'd call our doggie in the morning when it was time to go outside to do her business. She would run from the foot of the bed and place her neck over that of our sleeping daughter as if she were hiding or seeking refuge and she just knew her human friend would save her from having to leave the comfort of the warm covers. Honey Bear's balance wasn't the best and when she tried to sit up, she usually fell over. That's when we figured out that she could sit up perfectly if we leaned her in a corner. She wasn't too crazy about doing it, but she did. It was then we first noticed that if a Yorkie is reluctant to do something their owners ask of them, they will do it, but it is often punctuated with a yawn. We have since observed other dogs and noticed many of them will yawn while doing a task they'd prefer not to. In slow motion, Honey Bear would stare down at her shadow and follow it in circles. Once in a while she'd close her mouth when her tongue hadn't fully retracted back inside and there it would be, all cute and pink. I was crazy about my Honey Bear. To this day, whenever I think of that little creature that by kennel club standards was far too big and imperfect, I picture one of the cutest, most loving creatures God ever made. I miss her.
