Nancy attended Devin Ghavidel's self defense seminar.  She was given permission to include his advice here.

We strongly urge that you also check out Safety Info Culled from the Web where there is more useful advice.  Devin covered many of the points listed there and we have not duplicated material

     Be safe,

DEVIN GHAVIDEL'S SAFETY TIPS

HOME

Move in

  • Change the locks - your landlord probably won't.

Peeping Tom test

  • Do everything you would normally do when you come home at night and then go outside and look in your own windows.  Correct any problems you see and then walk around your house or apartment again.

Utility representatives

  • Call the company and check up on those badge numbers - and the reason for coming to your door.

Apartment mailboxes

  • Never put your first and last name on the mailbox.

  • A stolen mailbox key can lead a predator back to your apartment - pay to have your lock changed.

CAR

Fake cop pullover

  • This is not a joke.  Real cops should not mind following you until YOU decide you've come to a safe spot - with lights and people - to pull over.  Even a crossroads is better than an empty stretch of road.

GO FOR THE EYES

MORE TIPS

One serial killer has used a recording of a crying baby to get women to open their doors.  If you hear a baby, call the police.

Buy a large dog dish, fill it with water and place it by an outside door to make the bad guys think you have a big dog!

Whenever I am walking alone, I always carry my keys with each key slipped between each finger while my hand is in a fist.  This way if anyone approaches me, one punch will do major damage.   Denise

A pen in hand can make a useful  weapon.  Chances are an assailant who would take a gun away from you will leave the pen you seem to be fumbling with alone.  It's harsh, but a hard jab in the eye of your attacker could give you enough time to get away and save your life.   Steve Weaver, Balkan Siding, OKC
