The 14th Dalai Lama His Holiness Tenzin Gyatso The very mountainous country of Tibet has had a long tradition of hidden mystery simply because it was inaccessible. Until the technological advances of the 20th century, most Westerners remained unaware of this "roof of the world" that contained not only Mt Everest, but also a thriving, if traditional, Buddhist nation. But like all countries, Tibet has had a history of interaction and occasional conflict with its neighbors – especially India and China. In October 1950, the People's Republic of China invaded what it considered to be a recalcitrant Chinese province. China vigorously pacified Tibet with imprisonment, executions, cultural genocide and religious suppression. By March 1959, the country's nominal ruler, the 14th Dalai (Supreme) Lama (Monk), was forced to flee to India where he established a government in exile. Tenzin Gyatso was born in 1935. He was recognized as the 14th reincarnation or reborn soul of the first Dalai Lama, Dge-'dun-grub-pa, and a physical manifestation of a Buddha-to-be in 1939. With the consent of his family, the child was raised by monks to rule his nation and provide spiritual guidance. A close look at the conduct and philosophy of the Dalai Lama reveals a man of peace with a universal message of loving kindness and goodwill. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.
