Everyone wants to be fresh, and these pretty shoe stuffers do the trick.  I made mine with a ribbon between them so when not in use, they can be hung as a sachet on the closet rod or from a fancy hanger.  These feminine and oh-so-easy to make Sole Scents were inspired by the Victorians.

     Enjoy,
     Jane Marie

To make one pair of Shoe Sachets, you'll need:

  • Two 3 1/2" x 8 1/2" swatches of floral fabric for front sides (tapestry, upholstery, calico will work)
  • Two 3 1/2" x 8 1/2 " coordinating fabric for back (plain, striped, dotted)
  • Pinking sheers if available - if not, scissors
  • Needle & coordinating thread
  • Several straight pins
  • Ruler or dull knife for turning
  • Two feet of 1/2" coordinating ribbon
  • Batting
  • Perfume or potpourri oil for scenting
  • Two ribbon roses (or charms, buttons, silk leaves, faux pearls to embellish if desired)
  • Hot glue gun or other glue (optional)

From the front floral/tapestry fabric, cut two rectangles 3 1/2"x 8 1/2" each, rounding the two corners at one of the short 3 1/2" sides.  This will be the bottom end that will go into the toe of the shoe.

Cut two more matching rectangles with the back plain/stripped fabric, rounding the 3 1/2" short ends, as well.

With right sides together, lay one front/floral and one back rectangle on top of each other, lining up the edges.

Turn back each top straight 3 1/2" edge two inches to form what will be an interior cuff.  This edge will appear as a finished edge when you turn your sachet right side out.  Pin in place.

On each of the sachets, hand or machine stitch a 1/4" seam allowance down one long side, across the rounded bottom and back up the opposite long side.

Turn each sachet right side out.  With a ruler or dull knife, poke the bottom to make sure it is opened as far as the seam allowance will permit.

Finger press your sachet.

Make a 1" ball of batting.

Spray the batting ball with perfume or dip it into potpourri oil.  Add more batting around so it won't wet your fabric and leave a spot.  Stuff the sachet to within 2" of the top edge.

Repeat all steps for the second sachet.

Take a 6" length of ribbon and tie a tight bow around the top of the sachet, 2 inches from the top.  Repeat on second sachet.

Lay the two sachets side by side.  Hot glue or stitch a 12" length of ribbon on the upper inside corners at the openings of both for hanging.

Pin or stitch a ribbon rose, charm or trim of your choosing to the center of the bow in the front of each.  This way the ribbon rose, etc., can be removed and the bow untied if ever you want to refresh the perfume/oil with more.  You can also hot glue the rose, charm, etc., but you will be unable to open the sachet as easily and the bow may have to be replaced if the glue makes it unsightly.

A few inches small faux pearls, can be sewn or glued under the ribbon rose.  Embellish as you please.

In an age when few people take the time to make endearments like Shoe Sachets, this simple craft will delight any woman or girl for Mother's Day, birthday, Valentine's Day, an anniversary or Just Because!
