In a wide mouth quart jar or decorative clear container, layer the following ingredients in order, packing each layer down so it is less likely to shift:

Bottom Layer:

  • 3/4 cup white sugar

2nd Layer:

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

3rd Layer:  mix the following ingredients together:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

Top Layer:

Choose only one ingredient (treat) from the following list.  If the item of your choice is large than 1/2 inch, chop it into 1/2 inch-sized pieces:  Fill to the top of the jar packing tightly.

  • M&M's®  (I used most of a 15.4 ounce bag to completely fill a quart jar)
  • Peanut Butter Cups
  • Toffee
  • Raisins
  • Oreo® Cookies

Decorating your gift:

Seal the jar tightly.  With pinking shears, cut a circle of colorful fabric one inch in diameter larger than the diameter of the jar lid.  Place it over the lid and hold it securely in place with a rubber band.  Cover the rubber band with raffia or a pretty ribbon tied in a bow.  At the bottom of each end of ribbon, tie on or glue a couple of unusual buttons or charms.  Be creative!

Attach the Recipe Card:

On a recipe card, handwrite or type the following directions for baking the cookies:

Cookie Mix

Carefully remove the treats (top layer) from the jar and set aside.  Pour the remaining ingredients into a large bowl and blend.

Add and mix in well the following:

  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup softened butter or margarine for baking
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Fold in treats (original top layer)

Shape the dough into 1-inch balls.

Bake on greased cookie sheet 350˚ F for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown on the edges.

Cool for 5 minutes on the cookie sheet, then remove and let cool on a rack.

This recipe makes 2 dozen cookies.
