One year we got a card for the holidays from my neighbor Maggie that was so different, it inspired me to make a Christmas Symbol Wreath, similar to the drawing that was on the front of it.  This wreath will make a meaningful and long lasting treasure for the whole family or a lovely gift as well.  I like my wreath so much; I leave it up year round.  Listed below are the items needed along with their meanings.  You might consider writing, in your best script, the list of items and their symbols on pretty paper, put the list in a small frame and hang it in the center of the wreath.

      Happy Holidays,
     Jane Marie

You'll need:

  • 22-inch grapevine wreath or straw wreath (a smaller one can be used, but be sure you have enough room so the items you will attach to it don't look crowded)
  • Mistletoe for Peace - fresh or artificial
  • Rose for God's Divine Love - 3 silk, fresh or dried roses, all one color or multi-color
  • Evergreen for Triumph Over Adversity - silk or fresh tied small bunches or pull them right from a pine bough
  • Ivy as a Symbol of God - silk, several strands with plenty of leaves
  • Holly for the Crown of Thorns - fresh or silk
  • Holly Berries for Drops of Blood - fresh or red berries from a silk holly spray
  • Candle/Light for the Word of God - taper candle to coordinate with your rose color or a battery-powered candle if you prefer
  • Star for the Foretelling of the Babe -  my friend Larry Dingman, our resident horticulturist, cut an irregularly shaped star for me from copper sheeting.  I punched a tiny hole in the tip of the star to hang it with wire.  Whatever you use, make it sparkle.
  • Wheat for the Resurrection - fresh or silk, several stocks
  • Ribbon to make a bow - I used sheer white and patterned ribbons combined and twisted them into a multi-looped bow.  Secured with wire.
  • Glass Hearts - optional - I love hearts and added two glass heart ornaments
  • Wire - Use thin, soft wire to attach as many of the articles to the wreath as possible.  Use hot glue as a last resort.  That way, should you ever decide to redecorate the wreath, you won't have to chip off any glue.
  • Hot glue - use sparingly to secure your items.
  • Florist's U-shaped pins if using a straw wreath

Gather all your symbols.

Make a bow from the ribbon, if desired, adding any extra trim of your choice to the bow.

With the empty wreath laying flat on a table, begin by placing the ivy and evergreen into the wreath, securing them with wire or glue.  Use as much or as little of the greenery as you like, but be sure and let some of the grapevine or straw wreath show through as a background.

Arrange the rest of your items around the wreath, making sure you have balance and pleasant color distribution.  Step away and look at your wreath.   Once you're happy, attach each item.

Twist three strands of 6 inch or so wire together to make a strong loop for hanging.  Insert one end through the back of the top of the grapevine and form a circle twisting the ends together.  Or loop a ribbon around the top of the wreath, to a visible bow and hang it from the ribbon.

Hang your wreath on a covered porch or door or in any room of the house.
