The first time I took these treats to a party, they caused such happy chatter it has become a tradition.  They're fun and  children can add the eyes, unless of course, you prefer blind mice!

    Enjoy,
     Jane Marie

Chocolate Mice

You'll need:

  • 2 jars of maraschino cherries WITH STEMS for tails
  • Chocolate - sweet or semi-sweet or white chocolate - candy grade couverture chocolate is even better
  • White or pink cake decorating frosting in a tube (optional)
  • Waxed paper

Drain and rinse the cherries.  Let them dry on a paper towel.

Melt the chocolate over water (double boiler).

Dip each cherry into the melted chocolate and place on the waxed paper until the chocolate hardens.

Add eyes with dots of frosting.

Serve on a pretty platter.  These mice would be cute beside a gingerbread house or surrounding the base of a lighted ceramic house or church, as in church mice at Christmas.  But any holiday that is celebrated with chocolate is a good excuse to make some.

My daughter and I have made the Christmas mice for years - it has become one of our family traditions.  My brother-in-law, manager of Terminix, loves to get them for his Christmas gift.  Do you know of any other "pest" type treats I can make for him this year?

We have an exchange student from Macedonia and she is excited about making lots of candy & cookies.

Thanks!
Kim

Hi Kim,

This is Jane Marie's sister, Nancy.

We've been trying to decide on another recipe for this month [December 2004], and you've made it easy.  Click here for my very loose
adaptation of candy cane cookies, which would make great snakes if dyed green.

You could also make bugs by adding red or green food coloring to any sugar cookie dough, cutting the cookies out, sticking on two M&Ms
® for eyes and baking.  As soon as they come out of the oven, push licorice pieces into the still soft cookies as legs, and you should have spiders - I haven't actually tried this but it sounds good, right?

Please accept our very best wishes for your family and your exchange
student.  And thanks for writing.

Nancy
