Martha Bear® in

It's a Better Thing to Give

One day Martha Bear® and her grasshopper companion, Airborne, were cooling themselves in the shade of the Pine Tree Place at Stately Martha Manor.

[The Manor sits on Amelia Island, which floats beside north Florida in the Atlantic Ocean, or as Martha likes to call it, "The Big Pond."]

Martha, who is a large white bear crafted with no eyes by her dear Jane Marie, got to thinking out loud.  "You know, my good friend, we are so very blessed.”

Airborne’s tiny eyelashes fluttered and he awoke, mildly surprised that he had fallen asleep.  "Hmm?  Oh, yes.  We are blessed, indeed,” and those tiny lashes slipped to once again cover his minuscule eyes.

But Martha Bear® continued talking.  Her words kept her friend from dreaming more grasshopper dreams so Airborne stretched his wings and hoppie legs, and flew to sit on Martha Bear’s forearm.

[This was a very comfortable spot for a bug to sit since the bear had no upper body strength due to the fact that her muscles were made from polyester stuffing.]

“I thought of a way we might help others less fortunate.”

“What would that be?” Airborne asked intently.

“We need to promote a charity on our website.”

“That’s a fine idea,” he agreed.  "But which charity?”

“Well, I think we should ask all staff members for their suggestions.  Then, we'll choose the best one by employee referendum, with the approval of Jane Marie and Nancy, of course.”

“Of course.”

And so the word went forth by e-mail, by voice mail and by snail mail to any and all who worked at the GraciousJaneMarie.com / MarthaBear.com Southeastern Branch in Florida and the greenlightWRITE.com World Headquarters in Oklahoma.  And that word got a quick response.  A list of charities was compiled with only two restrictions coming from Jane Marie and Nancy.  One vote per staff member and staff members could not vote for the charity they’d suggested.

Florida Felines     Oklahoma team

The ballots were tallied.  Here are the staff sponsors of the top five vote getters and a brief description of their charity.  Coming in at:

#5.  Airborne (grasshopper / Advisor, Florida) - INSECT U - an institution of higher learning for bugs of all species on Amelia Island, Florida.

#4   General Dogsbody (canine of mixed heritage / Junior Canine Editor / Food Raider, Oklahoma) - FIDO’S FASHIONS - For those animals in need of foul weather gear.

#3   Bird (cockatiel / Director of Security, Florida) - GRAIN HARVESTERS, INTL.- Specializing in seed, husked and unhusked, for wild and domestic birds.

#2   Teddy O™ (teddy bear / Senior Ursine* Editor / Mischief Maker, Oklahoma) - THE THUNDERING TEDDIES - Tough teddies trying to do tender things.

*Ursine = Bear.  Martha Bear® likes to think of herself as an ursine because she uses Bear as her last name.

And the #1 entry overwhelmingly chosen by all for its compassion, importance and pure necessity was:

Martha Bear® (teddy bear / Senior Ursine Editor, Florida) -

HELEN KELLER™ WORLDWIDE
foundation for the blind

Many congratulations were sent to Martha Bear®, but nearly all contained the same question:  "Why did you choose Helen Keller™ Worldwide as your charity?"

Martha Bear® responded, "I thought about the American Cancer Society and the March of Dimes, both fine charities.  But since I was born with no eyes, Helen Keller™ Worldwide seemed a logical choice.  Unfortunately you know, not everyone can see with his or her heart as do I.  I want to lend my assistance to the prevention and treatment of blindness whenever I can.

A collective sigh of understanding passed through the Florida and Oklahoma website offices that day.  Everyone agreed that giving to others was, indeed, a better thing

Make the Right Choice - Choosing a Charity

By Nancy Kamp

There are many worthy causes.  Sadly, some not so worthy organizations can sound just as good.  So how do you choose where to donate your hard-earned money?

First, consider what's important to you.  Is it children, families, battered women?  Do you favor the arts, a political candidate or education?  And how about medical research or help for those with major illnesses?Second, think about the geographic area you want to impact.  Do you want to help those in or near your neighborhood?  Victims of natural disaster?  People in faraway places who are in need because of war, brutal local customs like slavery, or famine?Third, look closely at the spending habits of charities that interest you.  If the head of a charity that has caught your eye gets rock star treatment or too much of the budget goes toward fund raising, perhaps your money would be used more effectively in another, better run organization.

We urge you to do your homework before your donate.  Here are some useful resources:
