Monster

I can't remember what Monster's name was when our daughter gave him to us.  He was a gray-stripped male cat she'd gotten when she was in college.  Moving to an apartment that didn't allow pets, she naturally handed him over to us, knowing we'd give him a good home.  We soon had to change his name to Monster because he was mean, but only sometimes.  Our daughter explained that her male friends had teased the cat and made him aggressive, and that was the reason for his scratching us.

Eventually, Monstie, as we came to call him, settled down into a routine.  He'd cuddle on the recliner, purring away and enjoying his surroundings.  Once in a great while, while he was still purring, something would set him off, a dream, who knows what, and he would as my husband says, "Bite the blood out of you.”  Some people might have considered putting him down, but when he looked at us with those wide yellow eyes, you just knew his occasional bad temper was the result of the teasing he'd endured.

Monstie always went outside to do his business, but he didn't come home one night.  My husband found him on the front door mat, his left hind leg broken.  All we can think is that he jumped from the second story balcony and landed on the hard cement of the patio below.  Somehow, he managed to drag himself all the way up the stairs to our front door.  He knew we would take care of him.  And we did.  $600 later, he had a metal pin in his leg and was on his way to a complete recovery.

We had many good years with Monstie.   He got so he had to take a pill every day, and it seemed as though he knew the medicine was good for him because he never fought.

The whole family has small scars to prove that Monstie was here, but we wear them like a badge of honor because he was a loving, innocent kitty at heart.
