Remember the autograph book from your childhood?  Dig it out, and relive your youth.  Or start a new one when family and friends gather.

    Enjoy,

    Jane Marie

PS  Nancy claims she got the autograph of Richard Sanders, the actor who played Les Nessman on WKRP.  It remained on her refrigerator for years after Sanders appeared at local car dealership that held a "turkey drop" in tribute to an episode on the show.  Ultimately of course, a dog ate the autograph.

PPS  Nancy did not get a turkey, so there's really no proof to this story.

Autograph Books

History of Autograph Books

People love to remember their friends, relatives, acquaintances and anyone famous who may have crossed their paths throughout their lifetimes.   That's why scrapbooking is so popular today, and it all began with the highly prized Victorian Autograph Album during the 1800s.

The Victorians enjoyed embellishments.   They would appreciate today's scrapbook decorations that include buttons, stamps, lace, markers, deckle scissors and rubber stamps.   We would do well to copy their beautiful albums by adding needlepoint, water colors, inks, tooled leather, scissor-cut silhouettes, coats of arms or even hanks of hair to our decorating arsenals.

When photographs became available to the masses, it was natural to add them to autograph albums, which quickly became photo albums.   But the desire to collect autographs never went away, and was fueled by the rise of the movie industry and flood of celebrities it created.   Celebrity autographs have long been big business.

The post WWII generation saw cheap, ready made autograph books on the market and embraced them.   I treasure mine to this day - see right column.

Guest books for homes, businesses, weddings and funeral homes are readily available.   However, instead of purchasing an autograph book, why not make or at least decorate your own?

Decorate Your Own Autograph Book

It is never too late to start an autograph collection.  Get a blank journal, a guest book, an actual book that says "Autographs," or create your own.

Then, ask everyone to sign your book at your next party, school or church gathering, sewing circle, tap dance class, hand bell choir gathering, quilting bee, bowling, or other event.   People will be pleased you included them.

It doesn't matter what they write, but odds are it will mean something to you because you have a shared history and will understand the deeper meaning behind the words.

You'll need:

  • Colored poster board
  • Scissors
  • Decorating materials of your choice
  • Hole punch
  • Sturdy ribbon, shoelace or piece of cord or leather

Cut colored poster board into two 5.5" x 6.6" rectangles for the front and back covers.

Decorate the cover with the word "Autographs" and stickers, rubber stamps, markers, buttons, lace, whatever you like.

Cut copy paper into 10, 20 or as many pages as you want 5" x 6" rectangles.

With a hole punch, punch two holes on the left short side.   The longer 6.6" side will run across the top.  You may need to punch only a few pages at a time if the paper is too thick.

Lace a pretty ribbon or shoelace into the holes.

Tie a bow on the left, and you are set.

Have fun!

Jane Marie's Childhood Autograph Book

I was going through some of my childhood school stuff and came across the store-bought 4"x6" spiral bound autograph book I got as a birthday gift when I was a tween.

Actually, the title on the cover says, "Quote-O-Graphs," the first printed page reading, "Autographs of my friends, the famous – and not so famous." Its pastel colored pages are complete with places to fill in your Class Officers and year, Class Colors, Class Cheer, Activities, Favorite teacher, friend, music, and sports.

Then comes the fun part: Memories.  That's where my family and friends wrote their names and comments.  Note: These selections are typed just as closely as possible to the way they were written and spelled.
