All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) - I fell asleep in front of this classic story about the end of WWI.  NK

Apocalypse Now (1979) - see Weblog - Hart (not a typo) of Darkness / Trung Trac for our comments on this Viet Nam War classic.

Battleground (1949) - World War II

The Birth of a Nation - This important silent film is supposed to glorify the KKK.  Tsk.  NK

Black Hawk Down (2002) - Somali conflict

A Bridge Too Far (1977) - World War II

The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) - This Academy Award winning film whitewashed the brutal conditions in Japanese prisoner of war camps during World War II, but it's an important film.  Though I haven't seen it in years, I remember it well enough to recommend it.  NK

Cold Mountain (2003) - The DF and I loved this film.  It was epic, well acted and the large scale events (and the novel that spawned the movie) are loosely based on the reality of the Civil War.  NK

The Deer Hunter (1978) - Vietnam War

Empire of the Sun (1987) - World War II

Full Metal Jacket (1987) - Vietnam War

Glory (1989) - Civil War

King Rat (1965) - World War II

The Longest Day (1962) - World War II

M*A*S*H (1970) - The Korean War-focused TV show was better than the movie and the book together, but, hey, who remembers?  Maybe I just never liked Sally Kellerman.  NK

  TV series

  film

None But the Brave (1965) - Frank Sinatra never got much credit for this World War II film about the differences that really separate us from our enemies. NK

  video

Objective, Burma! (1945) - World War II

Paths of Glory (1957) - World War I

Platoon (1986) - Vietnam War

The Red Badge of Courage - The book is another Civil War classic that had a great plot and managed to be mind-numbing so I skipped the movie.  Shame on me.  NK

Saving Private Ryan (1998) - World War II

The Sands of Iwo Jima (1950) - World War II

The Thin Red Line (1998) - World War II

Rescued by Mao is William Taylor's first person account of his years as a Japanese prisoner of war.  Taylor was a construction worker on Wake Island when the island was captured.  His story brings us a civilian view of World War II and was chronicled The History Channel.  Nancy
